Sildenafil Citrate

Sildenafil Citrate

Otherwise known as generic Viagra, sildenafil citrate is a powerful drug with the power to restore men’s sexual potency. Synthesized by Pfizer scientists, and patented in 1996, sildenafil citrate was originally designed as a treatment for hypertension. During testing it was quickly discovered that the drug was much more effective at assisting men to gain erections than treating angina, and so was submitted to the FDA as a treatment for erectile dysfunction. Approved for sale in 1998, and marketed as Viagra, sildenafil citrate is now approaching its 10th birthday. In the past ten years millions of men worldwide have made use of this effective medication which allows sufferers of erectile dysfunction to experience long lasting, rock hard erections from arousal until climax.

Sildenafil citrate is typically taken at a 100 mg dosage which should be taken half an hour before sexual activity is to begin. Once taken, there is a four hour window in which the drug is active and in which a man should be able to gain an erection. Arousal is still essential for an erection to occur, so the user retains total control over his sexual experience. It is not recommended that sildenafil citrate be taken with food, as this can reduce its efficacy.

Other uses of sildenafil citrate include as treatment for jet lag (though the efficacy of sildenafil citrate as a jet lag aid has only been proven in hamsters), altitude sickness, and some cases of hypertension. Sildenafil citrate has also been shown to prevent wilting in cut flowers.

Sildenafil citrate does cause some side effects, these are usually mild and quite often disappear over time. Common side effects include headaches, sneezing, light sensitivity, palpitations, and an upset stomach. Less common and more serious side effects include hypotension (dangerously low blood pressure), stroke, and priapism, a condition which causes painful erections which do not go away. Some men also report bluish tinges to their vision, and the FDA has acknowledged that in some cases sildenafil citrate may cause sudden hearing loss. Most importantly, sildenafil citrate should not be taken by men taking nitrates, as reactions are severe and can be fatal.

As sildenafil citrate is a prescription medication it is wise for men to consult their GP prior to beginning use. A GP can assess a patient’s suitability, and also determine the correct starting dosage, which can vary from individual to individual. Though it is possible to obtain sildenafil citrate without a prescription, if you are a high risk candidate suffering from heart disease, liver disease, or if you are over 65, then it is highly recommended that you do see a doctor before purchasing sildenafil citrate.

Some people familiar with the brand name version of sildenafil citrate ‘Viagra’, may wonder about the safety and reliability of a generic version. It is important to understand that the generic version of a drug is equally effective as its brand name counterpart. As long as it is obtained from a reputable source, and is FDA approved, the only differences between brand name Viagra and generic sildenafil citrate are in the size, shape and color of the pills, and the reduced cost.
